Last May, Urban Breed decided to leave the group Serious Black, much to the surprise of the members of the group. The new singer who is Nikola Mijić, who succeeds A Urban Breed, will prove himself with the new album of the group.
1. Fans discover the announcement of Serious Black’s new album, « Vengeance Is Mine », which will be released on February 25th on AFM Records. How did the production of this 5th album go?
Dominik: Bonjour Carine, merci beaucoup pour l’invitation !
Well, I have to start a bit earlier in the timeline. We ended our last tour supporting Hammerfall right, a few days before the whole world was shut down. Soon it was clear that this happening could last longer than expected and that all the scheduled summer events wouldn’t take place in the way they were planned – if ever. So we already started listening through the leftovers from our previous productions and began working on their arrangements and composing new stuff. We hoped that in fall 2020 the situation would be better, so we waited for the postponing of our planned “Kings Today” headliner tour to the very last moment. The crisis went on … and we kept on using the given time. One very important thing is, that on this record we worked together very close, more than ever before – and the first time since our debut “As Daylight Breaks”. This is the result of real team work again. And this you can feel.
2. How long has the album been in the works?
Dominik: It all took us about a year. Although we had the opportunity to start sooner than planned, it took then longer than expected, too. Due to various circumstances, we were forced to postpone the finalization of the record a few times. But in the end we kept all the given deadlines that we could start the promotion campaign as planned. We are so thankful that AFM Record still believes in us and they do their very best to promote our maybe best album so far.
3. I discover that the line-up has changed. It’s no longer Urban Breed on vocals, but Nikola Mijić. What are the reasons for this change of singer?
Dominik: To explain this, I also have to go further back into the past. The production of our previous record “Suite 226” was tough like hell as Urban did not deliver his vocal files in time. On top of that, he wasn’t reachable for anyone of us – not even for our record company. We kept on trying, also asked his friends and relatives, to get in touch with him to discuss the reason for that, to find a solution together. But he simply didn’t give a shit. Finally, we got the last missing files three (!!) months after deadline and so Mario had to finalize the record within a few days that we could at least hold the release date. That was necessary because of the already booked tour with Hammerfall, which was so important for us. But, due to that major delay we couldn’t offer a special box set, and we didn’t get the vinyl editions in time which led to a worse chart entry, too.
On tour his “fuck it all” attitude went on, sometimes even on stage. He didn’t come to the sound checks and didn’t appear at the merchandise area after the shows. If that wasn’t already enough we were told by our crew members that he was telling lies about us, too. Later that year he wrote to “us” in an old chat room (only Ramy, a former crew member and I were still in there) and tried to excuse for his bad behavior over the last years. But: If he really wanted to clear things up and talk honestly, he knew exactly how he could get in touch with us all the official way. So we didn’t react immediately to that cheap try and waited. A few days later, instead of receiving an honestly meant mail of excuse, we were asked by magazines and business partners, what’s going on, as Urban posted on facebook, that he was out of Serious Black. That was indeed surprising for us – although I personally would have kicked him out already right after the last tour, or even far earlier. In a short public debate he tried to turn things around to his own favor but still didn’t ask for a talk. So, latest at this point, he was out for sure.
Nevertheless, the outstanding singer he is, we wish him all the best for his future life.
So, now we had to search for a new frontman in a very short time as the next release was already planned – more or less in details. But we didn’t watch out for a hired gun or just a copy of a magician who can sing too. The requirement was to find one who is able to sing our old stuff as well as he should bring in his own ideas, style and knowledge. Last but not least: he should pull the same rope into the same direction like we do. We searched for the needle in a haystack, so to speak.
To ask Nikola to be our new guy behind the microphone was finally the idea from our record company.
4. Did you have many choices for the future singer of the band, or did you have a specific person in mind? Did you do a casting?
Dominik: We were in contact with various great singers worldwide and also did some auditions via mail – more or less a casting. Then, one day, our label AFM-records told us that Eden’s Curse would split up, and that Nikola would be a great choice. So we contacted him and he was absolutely hooked. I don’t need to tell you what an amazing job he did on our current record. Nikola did not just replace a former member but lifts Serious Black to the next level. We are more than happy that we have found our “Mr. Right” within Europe. That makes it all easier. Now it would be time to present him on stage, too – so we will do, whatever is possible in these weird days.
5. This new album is called: « Vengeance Is Mine ». How is the choice of texts made?
Dominik: The lyrics now are not about fantasy stories or magic tales at all anymore. Although some lyrics of our previous album already contain some autobiographic themes, on “Vengeance Is Mine” we are telling true stories of our recent lives, unvarnished and uncut. This record is like a musical telenovela or a daily soap.
6. Who in the band writes the texts?
Dominik: This time we wrote the lyrics together and we let look deep inside our inner selves. Of course, some are done more by Mario, others by me or Ramy. Also Nikola brought in some additional ideas in the end. On some songs we even got some help from a very gifted singer and friend of us: Henning Basse (known from Metalium and Firewind). There wasn’t any ego trip by anyone at any time. We just wanted to bring out the best possible result to every single song.
7. What is the story of « Vengeance Is Mine »?
Dominik: In the center of the concept of vengeance it tells about Mario’s relationship of the past few years. He treated her like a princess, did everything for her. All seemed great and perfect – for outsiders maybe too perfect. Then, suddenly, when he just asked for a little give and take, she dropped him like a hot potato from one day to the other and told lies about him and his surroundings. It is so sad how one can be wrong about someone.
Other lyrics are about various people in our daily lives we had the “honor” to work with in our past – e.g. different musicians or people of the (music) business. It’s about intrigues, lies, megalomania, overconfidence or egomania of those people that we had to deal with. We are sick and tired of this kindergarten.
Without saying any names we want to clear up about those things happened, rectify them and we will not cover anyone anymore.
8. We find Ramy Ali, replacing Alex Holzwarth, who was the band’s drummer in 2015. For the French tour ?
Dominik: Ramy was already playing the drums on “Suite 226”, too. After Alex left the band, Ramy was the very first choice for us as he did such a great job back in the days on our first tour, then replacing Thomen. And he’s such a great person, too. You have to watch him play!
9. Where do you find inspiration to write your texts?
Dominik: As already mentioned, for this record, life itself wrote the stories. To having written down those lyrics, it’s setting us free and helping us to handle those experiences. Without knowing, I can imagine that it was like having a session at a psychiatrist or psychologist. It feels so good not to keep silent anymore.
But I strongly hope that we have to find different inspirations for the following albums!
10. Does the group: Mario, Dominik, Nikola, Ramy, Bob Katsionis, also participate in the text of the album?
Dominik: The hard core of the band contains of Mario, Ramy, Nikola and me. For some songs, we took some words of Bob’s demo recordings and wrote the lyrics around those. Such like at “Soldiers Of Eternal Light”. But most lyrics we wrote together, like I mentioned before.
I’m quite sure that on the next records we will keep on working close together with Bob as well again. He didn’t just play the keyboards, some guitars and solos but much more he contributed the musical base to many of the songs – so, without him the record would have been just half that long. (haha)
It’s not a secret that Bob has very much to do – he literally drowns in work – and therefore he doesn’t really have time for anything else outside of Greece. That’s also the reason why he doesn’t appear in our latest video clips or on our current signing card.
We are now working together with Moe, a talented live-guitarist, who will play Bob’s guitar parts at least for our upcoming live activities. But let’s see what the future will bring.
10. Will we have the pleasure of seeing you on tour in France in 2022?
Dominik: Hope dies last. Our postponed “King’s Today”-tour, now already reduced to a minimum amount of shows just within Germany, still dangles on a thin string. The originally planned gig in Paris couldn’t have taken place anyway, because the location stopped doing any live music events. We’re searching for a replacement therefor. The important thing is: We refuse to cancel any shows, but, if required, we’ll have to postpone them again and again. As long as the situation is still that insecure, I cannot give any prediction. But we’ll be back!
11. For the pleasure of our fans, would you have a concert or meeting anecdote to tell us?
Dominik: Let’s see … most of those stories I remember are either not joyful or simply private … (haha) Well, one day in Belgium we had to park the tour bus in an industry area. We had a day off and the other bands spent the night in a hotel. We stayed on the bus. Later at night when we came back from dinner we figured out that the main entry door of the area was closed and nobody answered the call on the talk-back circuit. So we had to break in somehow to get back to the bus. We managed to haul up our merchandise girl over the wall that she could push the button for the cars to open the great door, so we could walk in, too. That was the grand finale of a really great and fun evening.

Dominik: Bonjour Carine, merci beaucoup pour l’invitation !
Eh bien, je dois remonter un peu dans le temps.
Nous avons terminé notre dernière tournée avec Hammerfall juste quelques jours avant que le monde entier ne soit mis à l’arrêt.
Il est vite apparu que cette situation pourrait durer plus longtemps que prévu et que tous les événements estivaux programmés ne se dérouleraient pas comme prévu, voire jamais.
Nous avons donc déjà commencé à écouter les restes de nos productions précédentes et avons commencé à travailler sur leurs arrangements et à composer de nouvelles choses.
Nous espérions qu’à l’automne 2020, la situation serait meilleure, nous avons donc attendu jusqu’au tout dernier moment pour reporter notre tournée « Kings Today ».
La crise a duré… et nous avons continué à utiliser le temps imparti. Une chose très importante est que sur ce disque, nous avons travaillé ensemble très étroitement, plus que jamais auparavant – et la première fois depuis nos débuts « As Daylight Breaks« . C’est encore une fois le fruit d’un vrai travail d’équipe. Et cela, vous pouvez le sentir.
2. Depuis combien de temps l’album est-il en préparation ?
Dominik: Tout cela nous a pris environ un an.
Bien que nous ayons eu la possibilité de commencer plus tôt que prévu, cela a également pris plus de temps que prévu.
En raison de diverses circonstances, nous avons été contraints de reporter la finalisation du disque à plusieurs reprises. Mais finalement, nous avons respecté tous les délais impartis pour lancer la campagne de promotion comme prévu.
Nous sommes tellement reconnaissants qu’AFM Record croit toujours en nous et ils font de leur mieux pour promouvoir notre meilleur album à ce jour.
3. Je découvre que le line-up a changé. Ce n’est plus Urban Breed au chant, mais Nikola Mijić. Quelles sont les raisons de ce changement de chanteur ?
Dominik: Pour expliquer cela, je dois aussi remonter dans le passé.
La production de notre précédent disque « Suite 226 » a été dure comme l’enfer, car Urban n’a pas livré ses fichiers vocaux à temps. En plus de cela, il n’était joignable pour personne d’entre nous, pas même pour notre maison de disques. Nous avons continué à essayer, a également demandé à ses amis et à ses proches, de le contacter pour en discuter la raison, pour trouver une solution ensemble. Mais il s’en foutait tout simplement.
Finalement, nous avons obtenu les derniers fichiers manquants trois (!!) mois après la date limite et Mario a donc dû finaliser le disque en quelques jours pour que nous puissions au moins tenir la date de sortie.
C’était nécessaire à cause de la tournée déjà réservée avec Hammerfall, qui était si importante pour nous. Mais, en raison de ce retard majeur, nous n’avons pas pu proposer de coffret spécial et nous n’avons pas reçu les éditions vinyle à temps, ce qui a également entraîné une mauvaise entrée dans les charts.
En tournée, son attitude «fuck it all» s’est poursuivie, parfois même sur scène. Il n’est pas venu aux balances, ni au merchandising après les spectacles.
Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, des membres de notre équipe nous ont dit qu’il racontait également des mensonges à notre sujet.
Plus tard cette année-là, il nous a écrit dans une ancienne discussion internet (seuls Ramy, un ancien membre de l’équipe et moi étions encore dessus) et a essayé d’excuser son mauvais comportement au cours des dernières années.
Mais : s’il voulait vraiment clarifier les choses et parler honnêtement, il savait exactement comment nous contacter de manière officielle.
Nous n’avons donc pas réagi immédiatement à cette médiocre tentative et avons attendu. Quelques jours plus tard, au lieu de recevoir un courrier d’excuse honnête, des magazines et des partenaires commerciaux nous ont demandé ce qui se passait, Urban ayant posté sur Facebook, qu’il avait quitté Serious Black.
C’était en effet surprenant pour nous – bien que personnellement je l’aurais déjà mis à la porte juste après la dernière tournée, voire bien plus tôt. Lors d’un court débat public, il a tenté de renverser la situation en sa faveur, mais n’a toujours pas demandé de discussion. À ce stade, il ne faisait définitivement plus partie du groupe.
Néanmoins, nous souhaitons le meilleur pour sa vie future au chanteur exceptionnel qu’il est.
Donc, nous avons dû chercher un nouveau leader en très peu de temps, car la prochaine sortie d’album était déjà prévue – plus ou moins dans les détails. Mais nous ne cherchions pas un mercenaire ou juste la copie d’un magicien qui sait aussi chanter.
L’exigence était de trouver quelqu’un qui soit capable de chanter nos vieux trucs tout en apportant ses propres idées, son style et ses connaissances. Dernier point, mais non le moindre : il doit tirer la corde dans la même direction que nous. Nous avons cherché l’aiguille dans une botte de foin, pour ainsi dire.
Demander à Nikola d’être notre nouveau gars derrière le micro était finalement l’idée de notre maison de disques.
4. Aviez-vous beaucoup de choix pour le futur chanteur du groupe, ou aviez-vous une personne précise en tête ? Avez-vous fait un casting ?
Dominik: Nous étions en contact avec plusieurs bons chanteurs autour du monde, et avons également fait des auditions par mail – plus ou moins un casting.
Puis, un jour, notre label AFM-records nous a dit que Eden’s Curse allait se séparer et que Nikola serait un excellent choix. Nous l’avons donc contacté et il était complètement accro. Je n’ai pas besoin de vous dire quel travail incroyable il a fait sur notre disque actuel. Nikola ne s’est pas contenté de remplacer un ancien membre, mais élève Serious Black au niveau supérieur.
Nous sommes plus qu’heureux d’avoir trouvé la bonne personne en Europe. Cela rend tout plus facile. Maintenant, il serait temps de le présenter également sur scène – alors nous ferons tout ce qui est possible en cette période trouble.
5. Ce nouvel album s’intitule : « Vengeance Is Mine ». Comment s’est fait le choix des textes ?
Dominik: Les paroles ne parlent plus du tout d’histoires fantastiques ou de contes magiques.
Bien que certaines paroles de notre précédent album contiennent déjà des thèmes autobiographiques, sur « Vengeance Is Mine« , nous racontons des histoires vraies de nos vies récentes, sans fard et sans censure. Ce disque est comme une télénovela musicale ou un feuilleton quotidien.
6. Qui dans le groupe écrit les textes ?
Dominik: Cette fois, nous avons écrit les paroles ensemble et nous avons regardé au plus profond de nous-mêmes.
Bien sûr, certains textes sont plus faits par Mario, d’autres par moi ou Ramy. Nikola a également apporté quelques idées supplémentaires à la fin.
Sur certaines chansons, nous avons même eu l’aide d’un ami chanteur très doué : Henning Basse (connu de Metalium et Firewind). Il n’y a eu aucune autosatisfaction de qui que ce soit à aucun moment. Nous voulions juste faire ressortir le meilleur résultat possible pour chaque chanson.
7. Quelle est l’histoire de « Vengeance Is Mine » ?
Dominik: Au centre du concept de vengeance, il y a la relation de Mario de ces dernières années. Il la traitait comme une princesse, faisait tout pour elle. Tout semblait génial et parfait – peut-être trop parfait pour les étrangers. Puis, soudain, alors qu’il ne demandait qu’un petit échange, elle l’a laissé tomber du jour au lendemain et a raconté des mensonges sur lui et son entourage. C’est tellement triste comme on peut se tromper sur quelqu’un.
D’autres paroles parlent de diverses personnes de notre vie quotidienne avec lesquelles nous avons eu l' »honneur » de travailler dans notre passé – par ex. différents musiciens ou personnes de l’industrie (de la musique). Il s’agit d’intrigues, de mensonges, de mégalomanie, d’excès de confiance ou d’égomanie de ces personnes avec lesquelles nous avons dû composer.
Nous sommes malades et fatigués de ces enfantillages.
Sans dire aucun nom, nous voulons clarifier ces choses qui se sont produites, les rectifier, et nous ne couvrirons plus personne.
8. On retrouve Ramy Ali , en remplacement d’Alex Holzwarth, qui était le batteur du groupe pour la tournée française en 2015.
Dominik : Ramy jouait déjà de la batterie sur « Suite 226« . Après qu’Alex a quitté le groupe, Ramy a été le tout premier choix pour nous, car il a fait un excellent travail à l’époque lors de notre première tournée, puis en remplacement de Thomen. Et c’est aussi une personne formidable. Vous devez le regarder jouer !
9. Où trouvez-vous l’inspiration pour écrire vos textes ?
Dominik: Comme déjà mentionné, pour ce disque, la vie elle-même a écrit les histoires. Avoir écrit ces paroles nous libère et nous aide à gérer ces expériences. Sans le savoir, je peux imaginer que c’était comme avoir une séance chez un psychiatre ou un psychologue. C’est si bon de ne plus se taire.
Mais j’espère fortement que nous aurons à trouver des inspirations différentes pour les albums suivants !
10. Est-ce que le groupe : Dominik, Nikola, Ramy, Bob Katsionis, participe aussi au texte de l’album ?
Dominik : Le noyau dur du groupe comprend Mario, Ramy, Nikola et moi. Pour certaines chansons, nous avons pris quelques mots des enregistrements de démonstration de Bob et avons écrit les paroles autour de ceux-ci. Comme pour « Soldiers Of Eternal Light« . Mais nous avons écrit la plupart des paroles ensemble.
Je suis sûr que sur les prochains disques, nous continuerons à travailler en étroite collaboration avec Bob également. Il n’a pas seulement joué des claviers, des guitares et des solos, mais bien plus : il a contribué à la base musicale de nombreuses chansons – donc, sans lui, le disque n’aurait fait que la moitié de cette longueur. (haha)
Ce n’est pas un secret que Bob a beaucoup à faire – il se noie littéralement dans le travail – et ainsi il n’a pas vraiment de temps pour autre chose en dehors de la Grèce. C’est aussi la raison pour laquelle il n’apparaît pas dans nos derniers clips vidéo ou sur notre carte de signature actuelle.
Nous travaillons maintenant avec Moe, un talentueux guitariste live, qui jouera les parties de guitare de Bob au moins pour nos prochaines activités live. Mais voyons ce que l’avenir apportera.
11. Aurons-nous le plaisir de vous voir en tournée en France en 2022 ?
Dominik : L’espoir meurt en dernier. Notre tournée reportée « Kings Today », maintenant déjà réduite à un minimum de spectacles juste en Allemagne, ne tient qu’à un fil. Le concert initialement prévu à Paris n’aurait pas pu avoir lieu de toute façon, car le lieu a cessé d’organiser des événements musicaux en live. Nous recherchons un remplaçant pour cela. L’important est que nous refusons d’annuler des spectacles, mais si nécessaire, nous devrons les reporter encore et encore. Tant que la situation est encore aussi précaire, je ne peux donner aucune prédiction. Mais nous reviendrons !
12. Avez-vous une anecdote de concert ou de rencontre à nous raconter, pour le plaisir de nos fans ?
Dominik : Voyons voir… la plupart de ces histoires dont je me souviens ne sont pas joyeuses ou simplement privées… (haha) Eh bien, un jour en Belgique, nous avons dû garer le bus touristique dans une zone industrielle. Nous avions un jour de congé et les autres groupes ont passé la nuit à l’hôtel. Nous sommes restés dans le bus. Plus tard dans la nuit, lorsque nous sommes revenus du dîner, nous avons compris que la porte d’entrée principale de la zone était fermée et personne ne répondait à nos appels. Nous avons donc dû entrer par effraction pour retourner au bus. Nous avons réussi à hisser la fille qui s’occupe du merchandising par-dessus le mur pour qu’elle puisse appuyer sur le bouton des voitures afin d’ouvrir la grande porte et que nous puissions également entrer. C’était la grande finale d’une soirée vraiment géniale et amusante.
