This September 6th, 2019, release of the new album of the group Sonata Arctica: Talviyö (translation: Winter Nights).
The cover of this new opus, which represents the great cold with snow, moon and snow-covered fir trees, is very well designes. It’s a photo of the award-winning photographer Onni Wiljami.
We are no longer presenting the group Sonata Arctica, which plays Finnish powermetal for the great pleasure of its fans. This is their 10th album.
It consists of 11 titles, for a total duration of 56 minutes. For the realization, Tony Kakko changed usual methods and calls on an outside producer, Mikko Tegelman of Studio 57.
I discover the titles, and I am transported in a universe where I feel good.
Tony wanted an album that was musically different from the last two ones, and we can say it’s successful.
« Message From The Sun » a wink to the Northern Lights, (it’s so beautiful to see), brings us back to the early hours of Sonata Arctica with some classic heavy-speed.
In « Whirlwind » we discover a rather dark atmosphere, with a side more rock, which raises the sound level after the first title of the album.
« Cold » with its pop rock atmosphere, makes us travel into the 80s, it’s pretty cool.
« The Raven Still Flies With You » is a pretty piece of progressive rock style that lasts more than 7 minutes, with beautiful harmonies between keyboard and vocals.
« Storm The Armada » is a very surprising title that make us think of Dream Theater. We can feel the inspiration of Elias and Pasi.
« Ismo’s Got Good Reactors » also surprises with its Eastern and Celtic sounds. I loved it.
« Demon’s Cage » changes registry for a more aggressive sound.
Not to mention the ballads of the album, which I find beautifully interpreted: « The Last Of The Lambs » and « The Garden« , a conclusion diametrically opposed to the introduction of this 10th opus of Sonata Arctica.
The entire album is for me a success and does not look like the previous ones. Despite the slow passages of some titles, the fans of the first hour will certainly be conquered.

Très joli design de la pochette de ce nouvel opus, qui représente le grand froid avec la neige, la lune et les sapins enneigés. C’est en fait une photo du photographe primé Onni Wiljami.
Nous ne présentons plus le groupe Sonata Arctica, qui joue du power metal finlandais pour le grand plaisir de ses fans. Il s’agit là de leur 10ème album.
Il se compose de 11 titres, pour une durée totale de 56 minutes. Pour la réalisation, Tony Kakko a changé des méthodes habituelles et fait appel à un producteur extérieur, Mikko Tegelman de Studio 57.
Je découvre les titres, et je me laisse emporter dans un univers où je me sens bien.
Tony a voulu un album qui soit musicalement différent des deux avants derniers, ce qui est très réussi.
« Message From The Sun » un clin d’oeil aux aurores boréales, (c’est tellement beau à voir), nous renvoie aux premières heures de Sonata Arctica avec du heavy-speed classique.
Dans « Whirlwind » on découvre une atmosphère assez sombre, avec un coté plus rock, qui relance le son après le premier titre de l’album.
« Cold » avec son atmosphère pop rock, nous donne un ambiance années 80, assez sympa.
« The Raven Still Flies With You » est une jolie pièce de style rock progressif qui dure plus de 7 minutes, avec de belles harmonies entre le clavier et le chant.
« Storm The Armada » est un titre très surprenant qui fait beaucoup penser à Dream Theater. On y sent l’inspiration d’Elias et de Pasi.
« Ismo’s Got Good Reactors » surprend également avec ses sonorités orientales et celtiques. J’ai beaucoup aimé.
« Demon’s Cage » change de registre pour un son plus agressif.
Sans oublier les ballades de l’album, que je trouve magnifiquement interprétées : « The Last Of The Lambs » et « The Garden », conclusion diamétralement opposée à l’introduction de ce 10ème opus de Sonata Arctica.
En résumé, l’ensemble de l’album est pour moi une réussite et ne ressemble pas aux précédents. Malgré les passages lents de certains titres, les fans de la première heure seront certainement conquis.
