The band Amaranthe are currently on tour, presenting their new album. Here is the interview of Morten and Johan we met at Petit Bain.

WHO WRITES THE LYRICS AND THE MUSIC OF AMARANTHE SONGS ?
Morten : It’s Jake and Elize who are writing the songs, and then we kind of exchange files, and then we kind of have opinions about certain aspects of the songs, and then we kind of rehearse the songs individually and then we go to the studio; and then we get a little bit more creative sometimes in the studio and change up some things and maybe even write new songs in the studio as we have done sometimes.
Some songs are done before the studio, some songs are made in the studio.
DID YOU KNOW EACH OTHER BEFORE ?
Johan : No
Morten : I knew all of us because I was touring with all of them in another band in 2007 called Night Rage, and around that time you had this new project, which ended up being Amaranthe, and I joined because I met him.
I ‘VE BEEN FOLLOWING YOU SINCE YOUR 2013 TOUR IN FRANCE; EACH TIME A DIFFERENT SHOW. HOW CAN YOU KEEP SUCH ENERGY ONSTAGE ?
Morten : some people drink redbull, some people drink beer; I just eat a lot of bananas.
Johan : I drink bananas and eat beer. That’s good.
Morten: that’s what it’s all about; you have to have energy onstage; with this music, it has to be like that; even if you’re tired, you have to find/get energy, you get the energy from people, you kind of exchange energy somehow. Why do you ask?
AFTER THE SUCCESSFUL RELEASE OF « MASSIVE ADDICTIVE », THIS YEAR’S NEW ALBUM « MAXIMALISM » IS FOR ME AND THE FANS ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS; HOW CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS ?
Johan : It hardly got so big, we simply played music
Morten : We sold our souls to Satan
Johan : we just write music that people like, and there are different people who like Amaranthe, it’s not only metal people, it’s people who love pop and dance music, and it’s so many different people
Morten : we’re filling a gap, there’s no one else is doing this somehow. The bands that get to have some kind of success have to be bands that do something that nobody else is doing because there are a lot of bands that are playing really really good and really really well but they sound like other bands. You have to be unique.
ENDLESSLY IS A BEAUTIFUL BALLAD. WHAT IS THE STORY OF THIS SONG ?
Johan : That song is Elize’s parade number. She sings extremely well on it, that’s a really beautiful song
Morten : it’s very Satanic
Johan : I would love you endlessly Satan, blablabla
HOW WAS THE RECORDING OF THE LAST ALBUM ?
Morten : Long and dreadful. No, it was good. We did it in a different way this time.
We recorded the drums, guitars and bass in Gothenburg with a different producer, it was a different process.
We were more creative and the songs were a little bit more unfinished so we had to work a little bit harder and be more creative in the studio this time.
WHO HAS WRITTEN THE LYRICS AND HOW ?
Johan : The lyrics are up to Elise and Jake, so I have nothing to do with the lyrics.
Morten : I’ve heard that you get blindfolded and sit down on a laptop and you do (drum drum)
WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TRACKS ON THIS ALBUM ?
Johan : I love That song and actually Fireball is my favourite. A few others are good, hard fucking metal blablabla
Morten : For me I prefer the songs that I like to play, so it would be On the Rocks, cause it’s a really fun one.
HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE AMARANTHE’S MUSIC FOR SOMEODY DISCOVERING THE BAND ?
Johan : that’s so extremely hard to do. I think the best way of describing us would be to say : we’re a metal band with a lot of pop and electronic music influences. But I always tell people the best way .. is to find your own way.
Morten : people always have their own opinion of what style/ genre it is. Some people think it’s a melodic poem, pop metal or dance metal or whatever, people always make their own box and their own genre for us, everybody’s right in their own way.
I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT THE NAME AMARANTHE MEANT ?
Morten : Something everlasting, something that never fades
Johan : It has a lot of meanings, but all meanings mean the same like neverending, everlasting, someone who never gives up
HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU ARE ONSTAGE ?
Morten : Enjoying the energy from the crowd
Johan : Having fun , yeah, most of times.
YOUR BEST MEMORIES WITH YOUR FANS ?
Morten & Johan : In 2012 we had a show in GOTHENBURG AMUSEMENT PARK, we had no idea what to expect but there was around 10.000 people showing up, my whole family was there.
It was one of those perfect nights, family, friends, great show, great after party.

QUI CRÉE LES PAROLES ET LA MUSIQUE et COMMENT ?
Morten : Ce sont surtout Jake et Elize qui écrivent les chansons; puis on s’échange les fichiers et on partage nos opinions sur certains aspects des chansons. Ensuite nous répétons les chansons individuellement et nous allons au studio. On est un peu plus créatifs parfois en studio et on change des choses, parfois nous écrivons mêmes de nouvelles chansons en studio. Certaines chansons sont écrites avant le studio, d’autres pendant.
J’ai entendu dire que tu te bandes les yeux et que tu t’assois devant ton ordi et que tu fais ça ..
VOUS CONNAISSIEZ-VOUS TOUS AVANT ?
Johan : Non.
Morten : Oui, je nous connaissais tous car nous avions tourné ensemble dans un autre groupe, NightRage, en 2007, et à cette époque-là tu avais ce nouveau projet qui a fini par devenir Amaranthe, et je l’ai rejoint car je le connaissais.
JE VOUS SUIS DEPUIS VOTRE TOURNÉE FRANÇAISE DE 2013. A CHAQUE FOIS VOUS NOUS PROPOSEZ UN SHOW DIFFÉRENT. COMMENT PARVENEZ-VOUS À AVOIR UNE TELLE ÉNERGIE SUR SCÈNE ?
Morten : Certains boivent du redbull, d’autres de la bière. Pour ma part, je mange simplement beaucoup de bananes. 😀
Johan : Moi je bois des bananes et je mange de la bière. C’est bon. 😀
Morten : Tu te dois d’avoir de l’énergie sur scène, avec ce type de musique, tu ne peux pas faire autrement. Même si tu es fatigué, tu dois trouver l’énergie. Tu la trouves dans le public, c’est une sorte d’échange d’énergie entre eux et toi.
APRES LE SUCCES DE VOTRE PRECEDENT ALBUM ‘Massive Addictive’, CELUI DE CETTE ANNÉE EST POUR MOI ET VOS FANS UN AUTRE GRAND SUCCÈS. COMMENT EXPLIQUEZ-VOUS CELA ?
Johan : Ce n’était pas un si grand succès, on a simplement joué notre musique.
Morten : Nous avons vendu nos âmes à Satan. ( Rire )
Johan : On écrit simplement une musique que les gens peuvent aimer. Et plein de personnes différentes aiment Amaranthe: pas juste des métalleux, mais aussi des gens qui aiment la pop et la dance, tellement de gens différents.
Morten : On comble un manque: personne d’autre ne fait ce que nous faisons. Il y a plein de groupes qui jouent très très bien, mais ils ne proposent pas quelque chose qui les distingue des autres groupes. Tu dois te singulariser.
ENDLESSLY EST UNE TRÈS BELLE BALADE. QUELLE EST L’HISTOIRE DERRIÈRE CETTE CHANSON ?
Johan : Cette chanson, c’est le moment de gloire d’Elize. Elle chante extrêmement bien dessus, et cette chanson est très belle.
COMMENT S’EST PASSÉ L’ENREGISTREMENT DU DERNIER ALBUM ?
Morten : C’était long et atroce. Non, c’était bien. ^^
On a enregistré différemment cette fois-ci. On a d’abord enregistré la batterie, les guitares et la basse à Gothenburg avec un producteur différent. On était davantage créatifs, et les chansons avaient encore besoin d’être peaufinées, donc on a travaillé davantage au studio cette fois-ci.
QUELLES SONT VOS CHANSONS PRÉFÉRÉES SUR CET ALBUM ?
Johan : J’aime beaucoup That Song, et Fireball est ma préféré. Mais il y en a plein qui sont pas mal en fait.
Morten : Moi je préfère les chansons que j’aime jouer, donc ce serait On the Rocks, car elle est très fun.
COMMENT DÉCRIRIEZ-VOUS LA MUSIQUE D’AMARANTHE À QUELQU’UN QUI DÉCOUVRE LE GROUPE ?
Johan : C’est très dur à dire. Je pense que le meilleur moyen de nous décrire serait de dire que nous sommes un groupe de métal avec beaucoup d’influences pop et électro. Mais je dis toujours aux gens que le meilleur moyen de nous définir c’est avec leur propre définition.
Morten : Les gens ont toujours leur propre opinion sur le style ou le genre de notre musique. Pour certains, c’est un poème mélodique, pour d’autres du pop metal ou du dance metal ou peu importe. Les gens nous définissent selon leurs propres critères, et chacun a raison à sa façon.
JE ME SUIS TOUJOURS DEMANDÉE CE QUE LE NOM AMARANTHE SIGNIFIAIT ?
Morten : Quelque chose d’éternel, qui ne se fane jamais.
Johan : Oui, ce nom a beaucoup de significations différentes, mais elles convergent toutes vers quelque chose sans fin, d’éternel, (quelqu’un qui ne renonce jamais)
COMMENT VOUS SENTEZ-VOUS SUR SCÈNE ?
Morten : Je profite de l’énergie du public
Johan : Je m’amuse, la plupart du temps.
VOTRE MEILLEUR SOUVENIR AVEC VOS FANS ?
Morten & Johan : En 2012, nous avions un concert dans un parc d’attraction à Gothenburg. On ne savait pas à quoi s’attendre. Il y avait environ 10 000 personnes, et toute ma famille était là. C’était un de ces soirs parfaits: la famille, les amis, un show super, un after-show génial.
